Rex Hoermann, a suspected serial killer from Long Island, has now been charged in connection with the murders of seven women: Megan Waterman, Melissa Barthelemy, Amber Costello, Maureen Brainard-Barnes, Jessica Taylor, Sandra Costilla, and Valerie Mack.
The 60-year-old man was initially arrested in July 2023 for the deaths of four women, whose remains were found in burlap sacks along Ocean Parkway in New York over a decade ago. Hoermann has maintained his innocence to all charges.
The Gilgo Beach murders, a case that has haunted New York since the 1990s, sparked a lengthy and ongoing investigation. Hoermann, an architect by profession, lived in Massapequa Park, New York, with his now ex-wife and children at the time of his arrest. Hours after the announcement of additional charges in June, a note was found on the door of their suburban Long Island home.
«To any members of the media, law enforcement, or any other individuals, we ask that you respect our privacy and only address any questions to our attorneys», - the note read. «Please do not trespass on our property or loiter in this area».

According to Newsweek, Hoermann has been married to Asa Ellerup since 1996.
A few days after Hoermann’s arrest in July 2023, Ellerup filed for divorce from her husband. Despite the allegations against him, she issued a statement saying she would «listen to all evidence and refrain from judgment until the end of the trial».
«I have given Rex the benefit of the doubt, as we all deserve», - Ellerup added.
Ellerup’s lawyer, Robert Masedonio, claimed she had no knowledge of her ex-husband's alleged crimes. «After 27 years with Mr. Hoermann, Miss Ellerup believes that her ex-husband is not capable of committing these heinous acts», - Masedonio said, citing Newsweek.
While police investigated Hoermann in connection with the murder of Jessica Taylor, authorities determined that Ellerup was not living with him at the time of the alleged murder.
«Today's additional charge further confirms that Asa Ellerup has no connection to any alleged crimes of her ex-husband, Rex Hoermann», - Masedonio said in a statement obtained by the publication.
Hoermann and Ellerup raised adult children together: Victoria Hoermann and Christopher Sheridan.
After their father’s high-profile arrest in 2023, Victoria, who was 26 years old, and Christopher, who was 24 at the time, hired attorney Vess Mitev to represent them. Mitev told CNN in August of that year that they were «absolutely innocent witnesses caught in a hellish situation».
In June 2024, Mitev spoke to Newsweek, adding: «These are two young adults who have found themselves at the center of this deeply unfortunate incident, with which they have no connection other than being relatives of Mr. Hoermann. This is a very dark time in their lives. They are waiting for the legal process to run its course, whatever that may be»
