Rex Hoyermaan — a suspected serial killer from Long Island — has been charged in connection with the murders of seven women: Megan Waterman, Melissa Barthelemy, Amber Costello, Maureen Brainard-Barnes, Jessica Taylor, Sandra Costilla, and Valerie Mack. Hoyermaan was arrested in July 2023 and has pleaded not guilty to all charges. The Gilgo Beach murders, which have caused public concern in the state since the 1990s, led to a lengthy investigation. Hoyermaan worked as an architect and lived in Massapequa Park, New York, with his now ex-wife and their children.
In June 2024, Hoyermaan was charged in connection with the murders of Taylor and Costilla. At that time, a note was found on the door of the 60-year-old man’s house, stating: «To all members of the media, law enforcement or any other individuals, we ask that you respect our privacy and only contact our attorneys with any questions. Please do not trespass on our property», - reports Newsweek.

The suspected serial killer from Gilgo Beach, Hoyermaan, is still officially married.
Hoyermaan’s ex-wife is Asa Ellerup. According to Newsweek, Ellerup and Hoyermaan were married in 1996. Several days after his arrest in July 2023, Ellerup filed for divorce from Hoyermaan. However, she released a statement, noting that she will «listen to all evidence and refrain from judgment until the end of the trial».
«I have given Rex the right to the presumption of innocence, as each of us deserves», - Ellerup added.
Ellerup’s lawyer, Robert Masedonio, insisted that she knew nothing about her ex-husband's alleged crimes.
«After 27 years with Mr. Hoyermaan, Mrs. Ellerup is convinced that her ex-husband is not capable of committing these heinous acts», - Masedonio said, citing Newsweek.
While police investigated Hoyermaan in connection with Taylor’s murder, authorities concluded that Ellerup did not live with him at the time of the alleged murder.
«Today's accusation further confirms that Asa Ellerup has no connection to any alleged crimes for which her ex-husband, Rex Hoyermaan, is accused», - Masedonio said in a statement obtained by Newsweek.
Hoyermaan and Ellerup are raising two adult children together.
Hoyermaan lived in his home in Massapequa Park, New York, with his wife and children. However, in November 2024, Ellerup decided to move. According to several sources, their Long Island home has not yet been sold.
Masedonio said that Ellerup is moving to South Carolina because she has «lost attachment to her home of 30 years», - according to NBC New York. This news came after the house was searched by police several times
