In August 2022, the Los Angeles police arrested Rocky at LAX (real name: Rakim Athelaston Mayers) and charged him with two felony crimes — assault with a semi-automatic firearm.
«On November 6, 2021, at 10:15 pm, an argument occurred between two acquaintances in the area of Selma and Argyle streets in Hollywood», - — reads the statement from the LAPD. «The argument escalated and led to the suspect firing a revolver at the victim. The victim sustained minor injuries as a result of the incident and later sought medical help. After the shooting, the suspect and two other men fled the scene on foot».
After further investigation, detectives identified A$AP Rocky as their suspect. He has claimed his innocence.
If A$AP Rocky is found guilty on all charges related to the 2021 shooting, he could face up to 24 years in prison, according to the Associated Press. The publication also reported that Rocky’s lawyer, Joe Tacopina, noted that they were not surprised when the judge decided to proceed to trial.
«We are not disappointed, not surprised, we expected a trial, we have been preparing for trial all this time», - — said the lawyer. «Rocky will be acquitted when all this is over, without a doubt».
Tacopina stated that «there are serious issues with the witness testimony», - and added: «I think the evidence is insufficient».
The lawyer also responded to the question of whether Rihanna will support Rocky during his trial. According to AP, Tacopina explained: «He would never subject his family to this, he wants to protect them, he is handling it as Rocky would decide, he is protecting his family».
