Rapper Khalid came out as gay after a leak: what happened?

Khalid has just publicly shared that he is gay, but clarified that he chose to reveal his sexuality only after he was «outed».
On Friday, November 22, the seven-time Grammy nominee posted several updates on X, including one in which he stated: «I was outed, and the world still keeps spinning». He then added: «Let's get into it (lol) I’m not ashamed of my sexuality! It really doesn’t concern anyone! But I’m okay with myself 🖤 love you all».
Fans quickly guessed that the rapper and singer Hugo Almonte was behind the outing. The 28-year-old artist posted a photo on X — which has since been deleted — with the 26-year-old performer less than 30 minutes before Khalid came out on social media.
Here’s what you need to know about Almonte and their relationship.
Almonte is an openly bisexual Dominican-American from New York. A social media star, he has since been working on a music career. In March 2023, he released his debut album «El Can Se Acabó».
Almonte has over 300 thousand followers on Instagram, and also has a YouTube channel with 11 thousand subscribers.
Almonte appeared on X with claims about a former lover, whom he initially did not name, but said: «One of your favorite gay R&B singers sucked my dick, and it was really bad».
He then claimed to have dated and broken up with a «dumb singer» who allegedly falsely accused him of breaking into their home. «He's ugly, but he tried to frame me and lie, saying I broke into his house, because I broke up with him, why would I go to your house and do all that, if I broke up with you, idiot!»
Almonte followed this with a selfie with Khalid, captioning it: «The idiot lied and said I broke into his house, because I didn’t want him».
When Khalid discussed the situation in a series of his own social media posts, he mentioned that he «didn't hide anything», responding to supportive followers who noted that the revelation wasn’t that shocking. However, Khalid emphasized that it was his decision, and ultimately it doesn’t concern anyone.
In an electronic statement to Vulture, Almonte defended his actions, saying: «[It's] really funny how this works, because my intentions were never to out someone who was clearly already known in the community in Los Angeles».
Almonte added that people began to «humiliate» his identity and send him death threats. «All I got from this is, never let anyone silence me, it’s crazy that these people said I was seeking popularity, when I kept this to myself for five years, and finally decided to come out», he concluded. Almonte also tweeted and deleted a longer, similar statement from the Notes app, confirming his position. He stated: «If I had the chance to do it all over again, I would do it again and again and again the same way»
