Software engineer Josh Wardle is a genius behind the word game. The prototype for «Wordle» was developed in 2013, but Josh did not bring his idea to life until the COVID-19 pandemic. After introducing his friends and family to the game, Josh sold «Wordle» to The New York Times, which, according to him, was an «obvious decision» at the 2024 presentation, as reported by The Verge.
«I think it surprised many people», - Josh explained regarding his choice to sell the game. «For me, it was a very clear decision to sell the game. I didn’t want to run a gaming business. I’m interested in creating things».
Josh noted that it was «obvious» to him that the success of «Wordle» would help him «make [his] life if [he] wanted».
«But there are many things I wouldn’t have liked about running a gaming business», - the innovator admitted. «And it was so clear to me that I didn’t want anything to do with it. … I was trying to do something that was authentic to me. I was trying to build something for someone I love. It just so happened that many others loved it too».
Since Josh knows a little about inventions, he advises others not to «try to make 'Wordle.' Do what excites you and what matters to you. And everything else will follow from that».
