The jury’s decision in the case of Karen Reed: the charge of murderi
The review of Karen Reid’s case became headline news after it began in April 2025. Reid was back in court over the death of her late boyfriend, police officer John O’Keefe. The prosecution claimed during the second trial that Reid had hit O’Keefe with her car while under the influence of alcohol. Meanwhile, Reid’s defense argued that she did not kill O’Keefe, claiming he was killed in a fight at the police officer’s home. Reid also claimed to be a victim of cover-up by law enforcement officials. Now, as the jury began deliberating, get updates on the verdict below.

Reid, a 44-year-old resident of Mansfield, Massachusetts, who worked as a financial analyst before her trial began. She was in a relationship with O’Keefe until his death in January 2022.

At the time of publication, the jury had not reached a decision in Reid’s case. She and her legal team pleaded not guilty to charges of second-degree murder, manslaughter while operating under the influence of alcohol, and leaving the scene with personal injury and death.

After closing arguments were presented in June 2025, the jury began deliberating to reach a decision. Her legal team requested the judge to amend the verdict paper regarding the charge of manslaughter while operating under the influence of alcohol; apparently, the paper had been provided to the jurors in this case, according to multiple sources, and the judge denied her attorneys' request.

Responding to questions about the judge’s decision, Reid told reporters, «I think something that happened last year with the same kind of verdict form explains it. The jurors said the same thing, and we just wanted to avoid that again. Apparently, the court isn’t concerned, so we’ll just continue and wait for the jury’s decision… I feel good, I feel strong, and the jury will make the right decision. We chose them».

As the verdict had not been announced at the time of publication, it is unclear whether Reid could go to prison. However, if she is found guilty of second-degree murder, Reid faces a maximum sentence of life imprisonment. She also faces a charge of manslaughter while operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol, which reportedly carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison
