Republicans have made remarkable strides in their attempt to secure the governing trifecta.

Donald Trump was elected as the 47th President of the United States after a fierce battle with Vice President Kamala Harris. By midweek, he had already secured over 290 electoral votes, winning key battleground states such as North Carolina, Georgia, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Michigan. He also won the popular vote, marking the first time a Republican candidate achieved such a victory since 2004, when George Bush won re-election against Democratic challenger John Kerry.

The Republicans' success did not stop there. In addition to securing the presidency, they also gained control of the Senate. Now, the election results have set the stage for a crucial race in the House of Representatives. Here is everything you need to know about the changing congressional landscape.

All 435 seats in the House of Representatives are up for grabs in every midterm and presidential election. This year, House elections are focused in states like New York and California, where Democrats are trying to regain some of the 10 or so seats that Republicans have gained in recent years.

Representative Hakeem Jeffries, D-NY and House Minority Leader, expressed hope that his party can still win.

Meanwhile, House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., expressed confidence that his party will retain control of the lower chamber.

«House Republicans have been successful in securing critical flips as swing states, including Pennsylvania and Michigan, while our time-tested incumbents have secured re-election from coast to coast», - Johnson said in a statement. «The latest data and trends indicate that when all votes are counted, Republicans will maintain our majority, despite facing a map where 18 seats were won by Biden».

Election results may still take several days before House elections are officially announced.

There were a total of 34 Senate seats up for election.

Democrats flipped two key seats in New York, defeating Representatives Mark Molinaro in Hudson Valley and Brandon Williams in Syracuse. They also held onto two critical seats — one in Michigan and one in New Mexico — that Republicans hoped to gain. However, with major wins in Ohio, Montana, and Texas, Republicans took control of the upper chamber.

Republican senators are expected to elect a new leader next week, as longtime GOP leader Mitch McConnell, R-Kentucky, steps down from his post after a record 18 years in the position.

If Republicans manage to win full control of Congress, they will find themselves in a situation similar to 2016, with Trump at the forefront. In this second Trump administration, a fully Republican-controlled House of Representatives will give the elected president greater freedom to advance his agenda.

Over the next two years, the House will face critical battles on government funding, tax policy, immigration, and corporate regulation
