Nineteen-year-old college wrestler Ryan George died as a result of a fall while hiking to Illilouette Falls in Yosemite National Park on Sunday, September 20. He was a student at Santa Rosa College and was known for his positive character.
Santa Rosa College wrestling coach Fred Dwyer noted that George was one of the most genuine and kind people one could meet. He added that Ryan had the ability to light up any room and inspire those around him.
At the time of this report, additional information about the incident was not available. Two days before his death, on September 18, George placed second at the Dave Pacheco Invitational tournament at Sacramento College, where his team finished in fourth place.
George’s death occurred just weeks after the passing of his mother, Taji. His father died when Ryan was an infant, and he is survived by his sister, Jaida. A GoFundMe page created for Jaida states that she is grieving the loss of two loved ones and caring for her two-month-old son.
Jaida remembered her brother as a natural athlete and noted that she enjoyed watching him compete. She said that Ryan always loved to play and wrestle since childhood, and when he began wrestling, it came as no surprise to anyone.
Fred Dwyer added that Ryan was full of energy and always smiling. He also noted that George planned to study to become a firefighter and hoped to continue his wrestling career at a four-year university. Dwyer emphasized that Ryan was eager to learn and receptive to advice, which is a rare quality for high-level athletes.
