A man wanted for alleged child trafficking in Massachusetts has been arrested on Nantucket, federal authorities report. Rigoberto Chavez-Regaldo was taken into custody on October 8 without incident in connection with child trafficking charges that are said to have occurred in eastern Massachusetts, including Brockton.
Chavez-Regaldo, 40, faces two counts of sexual conduct for a fee, aggravated rape with serious bodily injury, aggravated statutory rape of a minor, child rape by force, two counts of human trafficking for sexual slavery, indecent assault and battery on a person over 14, selling alcohol to persons under 21, and enticing a child under 16. During a court hearing on October 8, he was ordered to remain in custody without bail until a dangerousness hearing scheduled for October 13.
Dennis Matulevich, head of the U.S. Marshals Service in Massachusetts, stated that allegations of sexual exploitation and child trafficking are among the most troubling. He emphasized that protecting youth from predators is a paramount duty of society, and the Marshals Service, along with law enforcement, will use all available resources to pursue those who prey on them.
Details of the alleged crimes committed by Chavez-Regaldo have not been disclosed to protect the privacy of the minor victims. His arrest on Nantucket was coordinated by federal, state, and local authorities, including the Massachusetts State Police and Nantucket Police. The Marshals Service noted that the arrest was made possible with the assistance of the Massachusetts State Police Air Wing, a specialized unit that helps in the search for wanted persons and missing individuals.
It is unclear whether Chavez-Regaldo has hired an attorney. The Marshals Service urges anyone with information about the whereabouts of wanted individuals to call 1−877-WANTED2 or send tips via email to [email protected].
