Rob Lowe has been sober for 34 years, but he said that his decision to become sober was the result of accumulating moments that gave him a «final wake-up call».
«Becoming sober was a gradual decision», - he told PEOPLE in an article on the cover dedicated to 10 transformational moments in the actor’s life. «It's small steps until you’re ready. You can’t do it until you’re really ready».
The 60-year-old Hollywood icon recalled that there were many small realizations before he entered the Sierra Tucson rehabilitation center in 1990, such as when he watched the 1975 film «Shampoo» with Warren Beatty, one of his «heroes».
«It's a great movie, but in the end he’s left with nothing, a bon vivant, a charming player», - he said. «It had a strong impact on me and was the first flicker of your consciousness, your destiny, God, saying, 'Hey, pay attention to this'».
After news broke of a scandalous sex tape in which he engaged in sex with two young women — one 22 years old and one 16 years old — during the 1988 Democratic convention, he said that this scandal «definitely changed his life at that moment».
«Looking back on it, I realized it was another step that led me to recovery and reassessing my life», - he said. «But what really changed me was that I couldn’t show up for my family and for myself».
The moment he called his final wake-up call came in 1990 when his grandfather had a heart attack, and Lowe ignored his mother’s desperate calls.
«I remember it like it was yesterday: my mom was telling me [on the answering machine] to 'pick up the phone, pick up the phone', because my grandfather had a heart attack. I couldn’t deal with it in my state and I needed to go to sleep, to wake up and deal with it», - the actor mentioned, saying that he immediately turned to tequila.
«Who doesn’t have a bottle of Jose Cuervo Gold on their nightstand? That was the final wake-up call. I’ve been sober ever since».
Since becoming sober, Lowe said that he was «so ready» to leave behind his days of hard partying.
«It was scary, [but] I learned the tools to change my life if you have the self-honesty to do it», - he said. «I felt, 'Oh, okay, I’m not alone. I’m not crazy'».
In the end, Lowe said, «You will only stop when you are ready, period»
