Robert Downey Jr. finally explained how his return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) happened.
The actor, who played Iron Man, appeared on Tuesday in an episode of The Hollywood Reporter’s podcast «Awards Chatter» and confirmed that Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige convinced him to return to the MCU in the role of the villainous Doctor Doom.
Despite his character, Tony Stark, being dead, the 59-year-old actor shared: «Susan [Downey] and I were sitting with Feige, and he said, 'I just can’t stop thinking about if you came back,' and Susan asked, 'Under what circumstances would we come back?'»
Downey Jr. recalled how he and Feige discussed the challenges of a potential return, asking themselves: «How can we not come back? How can we not disappoint expectations? How can we continue to exceed expectations?»
«And then he mentioned Victor von Doom», - continued Downey. «I studied this character. Later he said, 'Let's properly present Victor von Doom'».
The «Sherlock Holmes» star explained that everything became official after a meeting with Bob Iger at the head of Disney’s house. Downey Jr. was already planning to meet with Iger to discuss his contribution to the company’s parks and entertainment on-site.
«I don’t know how to describe this experience», - said Downey Jr. «I've had a lot of really cool experiences. We go to Iger’s house, sit down. I start saying, 'I just want to be…', and he says, 'I like it'. He likes it».
Iger then invited both the Oscar-winning actor and Feige to Disney’s Imagineering campus, which almost sealed the deal.
«[We] go to the Imagineering campus, and you want to talk about two guys who aren’t so easy to blow their minds, let alone have it happen at the same time — I can’t say too much about [it], but what’s happening there right now far exceeds my expectations of what was possible», - he teased.
Downey Jr. shocked Marvel fans when he revealed his role as Doctor Doom at Comic-Con last month.
«New mask, same task», - he said during his Comic-Con debut. «What can I say, I like playing complex characters».
Downey Jr. will portray Doctor Doom in the upcoming films «Avengers: Judgment Day» and «Avengers: Secret Wars», - set to be released in May 2026
