Fans of the «Avengers» — gather around, because Robert Downey Jr. is returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe! The 59-year-old actor, who played Iron Man in the MCU, surprised fans at Hall H on Saturday, July 27, at Comic Con in San Diego, by revealing his mask and introducing himself as the villain Victor Von Doom in the upcoming film «Avengers: Doomsday».
Director Joe Russo introduced Robert, telling the crowd at the Marvel panel how they made the decision to cast the actor for this character.
«If we’re going to bring Victor Von Doom to the screen — he’s one of the most complex characters in the entire comic universe… he’s possibly one of the most entertaining characters in all of literature», - he explained. «If we’re going to do this, we need the best actor in the world. As proof of the incredible possibilities of the Marvel universe, we present to you the only man who could play Victor Von Doom».
Robert then took the stage to remove his mask and say, «New mask, same task. What can I say? I like playing complex characters».
«Avengers: Doomsday» will be released in May 2026.
After that, Joe and Anthony Russo addressed the audience about their films, while a montage of their work played on screen. They also hinted to SDCC fans about the next part of the «Avengers», «Secret Wars».
«This four-film series has been incredible», - noted Anthony about his and Joe’s films. «And it left us really exhausted, with all our emotions on the floor. Since then, through a very special story, Joe and I may have found a way forward with all of you».
Joe remarked, «This is the biggest story Marvel Comics has ever told; it’s the first comic I read as a child and it made me love comics. That’s why we’re standing here now. And I think you all know its name».
«Avengers: Secret Wars» is set to be released in May 2027.
Earlier this year, Robert told Esquire magazine that he would «happily» return to the MCU if given the opportunity.
«It's too important a part of my DNA. This role chose me», - he said in April about his character Iron Man, who died in «Avengers: Endgame» after sacrificing himself to defeat Thanos. «And look, I always say, never, never bet against Kevin Feige. That’s a losing bet. He’s the boss. He always wins»
