During an interview with Us Weekly in October 2024, Cheryl opened up about her marriage to Robert. She noted that for long-term relationships, «there must be a connection».
«There must be a connection when you look at your husband or partner and all this craziness is happening around you, or you look and check in and say, 'Okay. We’re going to be okay. We’ll get through this moment,'» explained the actress. «And, you know, often it’s funny, and you can lean in and say, 'This is madness,' and have a moment together, and then hold your head high and move on to the next».
When it comes to her husband’s political career, Cheryl noted that people «have a lot of feelings about politics, especially in Hollywood, and I don’t know. I mean, to me, it’s all good».
«I'm willing to have those conversations with people, and to me, it doesn’t define someone», - said Cheryl. «For some people it does, and it’s like you can’t control that. I can’t do anything about it, so I have to let it pass me by».
Before meeting Cheryl, Robert was married to his second wife, Mary Richardson, from 1994 until their separation in 2010. The former spouses raised four children together: Conor, Kyra, William Finbar «Finn», - and Aidan.
Richardson tragically passed away in 2012. She was found dead in her home in Bedford, New York.
Robert married his first wife, Emily Ruth Black, in 1982 after meeting in college at the University of Virginia Law School. They separated in 1992 and officially divorced in 1994.
