Robert F. Kennedy Jr. suspends his candidacy for president, he announced this during his speech on Friday, August 23. Addressing the crowd in Arizona, the independent candidate criticized the Democratic Party and major media outlets, expressing his support for Republican candidate Donald Trump.
In his speech, Kennedy, 70, noted that he found that he and Trump, 78, «overlap» on many issues, such as «securing the border, protecting freedom of speech», - and preventing alleged Democratic interference in the campaign.
Elsewhere in his speech, RFK claimed that the Democratic Party «has turned into a party of war, censorship, corruption, big pharma, big tech», - among other accusations. Additionally, he criticized the media and accused publications of «censorship» in America.
The former Democrat left the party in 2023 and began his campaign as an independent candidate.
«We have inspired a mass independent political movement», - Kennedy said of his campaign, adding, «Over 100,000 volunteers have sprung into action. I hope they can change the decline of our nation».
The politician stated that the Democratic Party «aims to destroy [democracy]», - and accused Democrats of violating election rules and claiming that they support «censorship» in the USA. Additionally, Kennedy accused President Joe Biden of «mocking» Russian President Vladimir Putin, whom, he said, he does not condone for the invasion of Ukraine, and stated that Vice President Kamala Harris refused to meet with him.
«In my heart, I no longer believe I have a realistic path to electoral victory», - Kennedy explained. «I cannot in good conscience ask my staff and volunteers to continue working long hours or ask my donors to continue giving when I cannot honestly tell them that I have a real chance at the White House».
However, Kennedy clarified that he is not «ending» his campaign, but suspending it, noting that he plans to «withdraw [his] name» in «about 10 battleground states». He added that he has already started this process and that voters in these states can vote for him «without harming or helping President Trump or Vice President Harris»
