Romania did not come to lose at the 2024 Olympics in Paris, especially after their gymnast Sabrina Maneca-Voine received penalty points for stepping out of bounds. The 17-year-old gymnast competed in the exercise final, where she finished with a score of 13.700, penalized with a loss of 0.10 points. Her team requested a review of her performance, as the video footage does not show her stepping out of bounds. When the Romanian team brought this issue to the attention of the judges, President Mihai Kovălyu also commented on it.
The 46-year-old politician published a statement on Facebook on August 6: «With respect to Olympic values, the Romanian Olympic and Sports Committee sends this appeal, through which we respectfully ask you to organize a review of the decisive factors in the case of Romanian athlete Sabrina Maneca-Voine regarding the score awarded for the exercise performed in the final round held on Monday, August 5, 2024».
He continued: «The way the awarded score is assessed and the refusal to present reasons/evidence for rejecting the objection submitted within the established deadline seriously damages both the image of international gymnastics and particularly affects the athlete, endangering her mental health. The settlement of the Romanian sports case at the international level, her public statement that she refuses to engage in this sport as a result of today’s decision, morally obliges decision-makers to reanalyze, justify, and communicate the final decision».
This happened shortly after US gymnast Jordan Chiles also asked judges to review her score, and her wish was granted, leading her to win a bronze medal in the same competition as Sabrina.
Although the Romanian gymnast did not place on the podium, she expressed in her Instagram stories on August 5: «Thank you to everyone who supported me before, during, and after the competition… I hear more clearly than ever the words that coaches repeated to us almost daily in the training room: 'As Romanians, you must be more than perfect to leave no room for interpretation!' And here it is, proven again! Girls, lift your heads and keep your backs straight! Keep believing in your dreams! Go, Romania!»
