In the United States in recent weeks, there have been several aviation collisions, disasters, and malfunctions. Since the beginning of 2025, passengers have started to worry about flights. From a catastrophic collision near Washington to the crash of a medical plane in Philadelphia, Americans are questioning whether flying is still safe — despite statistics showing that flights are safe. Earlier this week, it was announced that a plane went missing in Alaska with several passengers on board during a flight to Nome. Given that previous aviation disappearances have ended in disasters, what happened to the Cessna?

Below you can find updates on the developing situation with the missing plane in Alaska.

The Alaska Department of Public Safety, State Troopers Public Information Office announced that it had «been in contact with AKRCC regarding the missing aircraft» on Thursday, February 6, 2025, at 4:00 PM local time.

It is currently unknown what exactly happened to the Cessna 208B Grand Caravan. According to data provided by FlightRadar 24, it was last seen over Norton Sound around 3:00 PM, and then the plane’s position was lost when it was about 2 miles off the coast, according to CNN.

In a Facebook post, the Nome Volunteer Fire Department confirmed that they are actively searching for the plane on the ground.

«We are currently responding to reports of a missing Bering Air caravan», - the fire department statement read. «We are actively conducting ground searches from Nome and White Mountain and have the most up-to-date information on the incident».

The department also noted that they are «limited in aerial search» due to «weather and visibility» in the area. «The National Guard, Coast Guard, and troopers have been notified and are actively involved in the search», - the statement added. «Norton Sound Health Corporation is on standby».

At 12:30 AM on February 7, the Nome Volunteer Fire Department announced via Facebook that they have no «updated information on the location of the missing aircraft» and noted that «crews continue to search on the ground, covering as much area as possible».

«It was reported that the Bering Air Caravan went missing during a flight from Unalakleet to Nome with 9 passengers and 1 pilot on board», - the Public Information Office statement read. «Search and rescue crews are working to reach the last known coordinates».
