Saturday Night Live UK mocked Shane Gillis on air
The Saturday Night Live UK show did not hesitate to critically comment on its American counterpart and its recent host Shane Gillis. On Saturday, October 17, co-author of the «Weekend Update UK» segment Anya Maliano made several jokes about the events on SNL U.S. from October 10, including mocking Gillis for his comments about women’s gym attire.

Maliano began with a joke about an amusement park operator at Oktoberfest in Munich receiving praise for giving away free bike shorts to women. She noted that such shorts protect women from lewd looks but make them vulnerable to something much worse. A photo of Gillis appeared on the screen as he delivered his remarks on SNL, eliciting laughter from the audience in the UK.

Then Maliano mocked Gillis for accidentally saying a profanity live on air during a sketch inspired by Dr. Seuss’s books. She said, «Last week on SNL, comic Shane Gillis also sparked controversy by saying 'f***' on air. Oh, Shane, you can’t say that, you stupid s***». This joke drew uproarious laughter in the SNL UK studio.

Interestingly, this jab at Gillis occurred on the same night that SNL UK presented the first official crossover show between the two versions of the program, where American actor James Austin Johnson reprised his role as President Donald Trump in a sketch featuring British comedian George Furakres as Prime Minister Andrew Burnham.

The controversy surrounding Gillis’s monologue continues after he sparked outrage by mocking women’s gym attire. In his comments, he stated, «I haven’t been to the gym in so long that I didn’t know women were dressing like 'whores' now». His words were condemned by many viewers and fellow comedians, including former SNL cast member Ego Nwodim and «Schitt's Creek» star Dan Levy.

Levy noted that «women wearing short shorts at the gym do not make them whores. It makes the men who call them whores misogynists». He added that this is not just a women’s issue, but a societal problem, as the objectification of women in media leads other men to perceive them as objects.

The next new episode of Saturday Night Live U.S. will air on October 31, with host India Navarrette and musical guest Gracie Abrams. Meanwhile, SNL UK featuring Cynthia Erivo and Blossoms will air on October 24.
