Simon Cowell reacted to Carrie Underwood joining the judging panel on American Idol. During a new interview, the 64-year-old America’s Got Talent judge commented on the decision to invite Carrie, who is 41 years old, almost 20 years after her victory on the show in 2005.
«I think it’s a good choice», - Simon told E! News in an interview published on Wednesday, September 4. «Carrie, we’ve known each other for a long time. I remember her audition like it was yesterday».
Simon then added that Carrie «was so good» during her time on Idol, and she is «such a nice person».
When it comes to being a strong judge on a reality show, Simon added that you just need to «say what you feel» in the moment.
«It's not that hard to do this job, I promise you», - he admitted. «We all feel the same way, and we don’t agree, thank God. Otherwise, life would be boring. Just enjoy it».
Simon’s comments came a month after it was announced that Carrie would replace Katy Perry as a new judge on the show.
«From American Idol hopeful to global icon… to IDOL judge!» read the caption on American Idol’s Instagram post from August 1. «Local superstar @carrieunderwood will be joining us for season 8!»
Katy, 39, expressed her support for the hitmaker «Before He Cheats», - commenting on the post. The «Teenage Dream» artist wrote, «Could only be Carrie! She will be amazing. Miss you. 143».
Longtime Idol host Ryan Seacrest also welcomed Carrie «home» to the show, posting his own tribute on Instagram.
«It's a full circle moment, going from announcing you as the winner of @americanidol 20 years ago to welcoming you to the judges' table», - wrote Ryan, 49, alongside a photo of himself with Carrie on stage. «Welcome home, @carrieunderwood!»
After Carrie confirmed her return to Idol, she appeared on «Music Row Happy Hour» on SiriusXM to discuss her strategy as a new judge.
«I think I’m versatile and hopefully, when I’m listening to people in auditions, I can apply whatever lens I need to about the music that I’m thinking about», - emphasized the «Blown Away» artist. «I think I can be honest and constructive, but still kind. And I think that’s the whole point, because people come and these are dreams. You become part of someone’s story from that moment»
