Simon Cowell admitted that he regrets not «owning» the name One Direction on The Diary of a CEO podcast on Sunday, June 9th. «The only thing I regret is that I should have kept the name… I should have owned that name», - said the 64-year-old music producer to host Steven Bartlett.
Simon created the biggest boy band of the 2010s, which included Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, and Louis Tomlinson. 1D became a global sensation after being formed in the seventh season of X Factor. The singers auditioned as solo artists but were brought together as a group, finishing third in 2010. This best-selling boy band released five albums during their time together.
«The only way I know to create a group… someone has to audition… they all had great personalities… they were all interesting people», - expressed Simon, talking about how he chose the boys.
In March 2015, Zayn left the group, turning it into a four-member collective during the On The Road Again tour. Despite his departure, Harry, Niall, Liam, and Louis continued to make music and released their fifth and final album, Made In the A.M.
Shortly after that, they announced a hiatus and have since pursued their solo careers.
As for a possible reunion, there have been no official statements yet. «There just hasn’t been that conversation… It’s a wonderful legacy. No, I don’t think [the question of a reunion] takes up all the energy in the room. The answer remains the same. There hasn’t been that conversation», - noted the Irishman during an interview with Zane Lowe last year. While there is no confirmation of the group getting back together, fans can enjoy the fact that some members have performed One Direction songs during their solo tours
