Microsoft 365 users noticed a problem on Thursday, September 12. A system failure in several applications, including Excel, Teams, and Outlook, began to act in the morning, and tens of thousands of workers were disappointed by the delay. The problem arose two months after the infamous CrowdStrike situation caused by incorrect software update.
«We are investigating the issue that may cause users to not have access to several Microsoft 365 services», - the company wrote via X (formerly known as Twitter). «Please look for MO888473 in the admin center for more detailed information and further updates».
On September 12, users of Excel, Teams, Outlook, and Word were unavailable for more than 20,000 users who complained about the failure around 8 a.m. Eastern Time, according to Downdetector. As the morning continued, the number of problem reports decreased.
Microsoft updated users via X throughout the morning. In one tweet, the company explained why the failure occurred.
«We have confirmed that a change in the managed environment of a third-party internet service provider led to the issue», - read one update via X. «The internet service provider has rolled back the change, and we are seeing signs of recovery».
According to USA Today, Microsoft Outlook experienced the most failures. The publication noted that 75 percent of the failure reports were related to the Outlook email application, while 17 percent of the reports were related to server connections.
Countless Microsoft users also complained about the unavailability of Teams.
Later that same day, Microsoft updated users that «there was a brief disruption in connecting to some Microsoft services in our network» and that «the issue has been resolved, and connections are working normally».
«We have been monitoring our systems and have confirmed that the issue has been resolved», - the company wrote in a separate post around 11 a.m. Eastern Time.
During the chaos caused by the Microsoft failure, the company also faced employment issues. According to Variety, the company plans to lay off 3 percent of its global team, particularly employees of the video game Call of Duty: Warzone Mobile
