Snapchat outage: when the app goes down, users start to complain

When a social media app goes down, even for a short period of time, users immediately start to complain. Content creators can’t post, and companies can’t share their typical information. Therefore, a malfunction often causes widespread panic until the problem is resolved. And today, October 20, 2025, Snapchat went down in the early morning hours. Since the company informed users that it is «aware» of the issue, when will it be fixed?
Below, find out what we already know about the massive Snap outage and how long it may take to restore the app.
Snapchat is still not working for some users at the time of publication. It all started in the early morning hours of October 20, 2025, and the company acknowledged the issue on X.com at 7:58 a.m. Eastern Time.
«We are aware that some Snapchat users are experiencing issues», - the Snapchat customer support account tweeted. It advised users to «hang tight» and assured them that they are «working on it!»
As Snapchat is currently working on the issue, it is unclear when exactly all users will be able to access their accounts and use the app. However, the number of reported problems on Downdetector decreased from 22,000 to approximately 10,000 by 9:00 a.m. Eastern Time.
Snapchat and several other tech platforms, including Canva, AWS, and the Amazon Ring doorbell app, went down in the early morning hours of October 20 due to a major internet outage worldwide. Banks in the UK and airlines, including Delta, reported sudden issues due to the outage. Since AWS is a cloud provider, several online services suffered from the sudden shutdown.
It was later revealed that the Amazon DynamoDB database encountered an issue, as reported by CNN. Users complained that they couldn’t access their data because the Domain Name System (DNS) encountered an unidentified problem. DNS is like a phone book that converts web addresses into IP addresses.
Amazon quickly investigated the issue and announced that the problem was «fully resolved», - although the company warned users that some regions may still experience issues with online services.
«The main issue with DNS has been fully resolved, and most AWS operations are now successfully completing», - Amazon said in a statement. «Some requests may be limited as we work on a complete solution. Additionally, some services continue to work on catching up on events, such as Cloudtrail and Lambda».
Snap Inc. is the owner of Snapchat. Despite Amazon and its services having the most problems today, a major internet outage affected several tech platforms
