Microsoft confirmed that it identified a potential cause of the problems after Downdetector, an online service for tracking technology outages, began receiving reports of issues with Microsoft Outlook in the afternoon.

Microsoft 365, which manages services such as Outlook, Excel, and PowerPoint, released an update at 5:01 PM Eastern Time, stating that they had «identified a potential cause of the issue and rolled back suspicious code to address the problem».

«After rolling back the problematic code change, we monitored service telemetry and worked with previously impacted users to confirm service restoration», - the Microsoft 365 status account reported shortly after 7:00 PM Eastern Time.

On September 12, 2024, users of Excel, Teams, Outlook, and Word experienced a failure affecting more than 20,000 users who reported issues around 8:00 AM Eastern Time, according to Downdetector. The problem occurred two months after the infamous CrowdStrike situation caused by a faulty software update.

«We are investigating an issue where users may be unable to access multiple Microsoft 365 services», - the company wrote via X (previously known as Twitter). «Please search for MO888473 in the admin center for additional information and further updates».

Microsoft updated users throughout the morning via X. In one tweet, the company explained the cause of the outage.

«We have confirmed that a change in a third-party Internet service provider’s managed environment led to the issue», - one update read via X. «The service provider has rolled back the change, and we are now seeing signs of recovery».

According to USA Today, Microsoft Outlook experienced the most outages. The publication noted that 75 percent of outage reports were related to the Outlook email application, while 17 percent were related to server connections.

Later that day, Microsoft updated users that they had «experienced a brief disruption in connecting to some Microsoft services in our network» and that «the issue has been resolved, and connections are working normally».

«We have monitored our systems and confirmed that the issue has been resolved», - the company wrote in a separate post around 11:00 AM Eastern Time.

During the chaos caused by the outage, Microsoft also faced employment-related issues. According to Variety, the company planned to lay off 3 percent of its global team, including its staff working on Call of Duty: Warzone Mobile.
