Amazon outage: thousands of users unable to purchase items Amazon outage: thousands of users unable to purchase items
This week, Amazon faced a massive outage that temporarily disrupted the platform, leaving thousands of online shoppers unable to complete purchases or access certain sections of the company’s website and app. The issue began around 2:00 PM Eastern Time (11:00 AM Pacific Time) on March 5, 2026, when users across the United States started reporting problems with the Amazon platform. What caused the outages?

According to data from the outage tracking platform Downdetector, the number of complaints quickly rose to tens of thousands as customers reported issues with placing orders, pricing errors, and difficulties accessing order history.

This is not the first time the popular system has experienced outages. The last major incident with Amazon Web Services (AWS) occurred in October 2025.

Here’s what we know about the Amazon outages in March 2026.

The outage in March 2026 lasted about five or six hours for most customers. The company acknowledged the problem in a message that appeared for shoppers. It stated, «We apologize if you are experiencing difficulties placing your order. We are working to resolve this as quickly as possible. Please try again later or visit our customer service section for further assistance».

Amazon managed to resolve the issue around 8:00 PM Eastern Time (5:00 PM Pacific Time) that same evening.

Although the recent outage lasted only a few hours, it highlighted how millions of consumers and businesses depend on Amazon’s infrastructure. Regardless of how brief the outage may be, a system failure can impact shopping, streaming, and a multitude of other internet services that rely on Amazon’s technologies.

Amazon explained the system failures as being due to a «deployment of code», - according to a statement received by Reuters.

«We apologize that some customers may have temporarily faced issues while shopping», - said a company representative. «We resolved the issue related to the code deployment, and the website and app are now functioning smoothly».
