«Scamanda: the story of a shocking deception and the fate of a female fraudster»
31 january 2025 в 22:13
Scamanda is the latest gripping documentary series that both captivates and repels viewers. Below, find out what it’s all about and where you can watch the new show.
Based on last year’s groundbreaking podcast of the same name, Scamanda tells the strange story of Amanda S. Riley, a loving mother, devoted wife, and alleged fraudster pretending to be sick with cancer. According to Us Weekly, the beloved mom and community member from the Bay Area, California, engaged in cancer fraud, making people believe she was dying of cancer and suffering along the way. She received money, attention, and gifts during her exhausting fake battle with stage 3 cancer.
Amanda’s blog, which documented her supposed cancer journey, ultimately led to her downfall — after receiving an anonymous tip, investigative producer Nancy Moscatiello uncovered inconsistencies in her narrative and alerted authorities to investigate. The Scamanda series follows the story up to Riley’s conviction on wire fraud charges in 2021 and her current five-year prison sentence.
But how did she pull it off? Apparently, not questioning the illness was a key moment. «We don’t question people who have cancer, and we shouldn’t», - said Charlie Webster, creator of the Scamanda podcast, in an interview with Us Weekly in January 2025. «She showed a miracle. She had cancer, but she survived. She passed out in church, peed in church, was taken by ambulance to church. She stood on stage and gave people hope, which we all need in life sometimes».
«She was a woman from their community, suffering and with two children», - Charlie continued. «People rallied to support her, and she was absolutely convincing. All eyes turned back. How could you doubt this? You would become a mean, awful critic in the back of the room».
The Scamanda documentary series consists of four episodes, broken down into «stages», - ironically reflecting the stages of cancer. Stage 1: Who’s Afraid of Amanda Riley? Stage 2: All About Amanda, Stage 3: Wheels of Justice, and Stage 4: Catch Me If You Can.
You can watch the television documentary series Scamanda on ABC. The premiere episode aired on Thursday, January 30, at 9:00 pm Eastern time, and you can watch episodes the next day on Hulu
