Selena Gomez opened up about her health during a new interview. Speaking with Vanity Fair in September 2024, the multi-hyphenate revealed that she cannot have children due to her «medical issues». She told the publication: «Unfortunately, I have a lot of medical issues that could jeopardize my life and the life of a child». «It was something I had to come to terms with for a while».

Although it was difficult for her to understand, Selena noted that she is now «in a much better place». She also explained how she plans to have children in the future: through surrogacy or adoption.

«I consider it a blessing that there are wonderful people willing to do surrogacy or adoption, both of which are huge opportunities for me», - she said. «It has truly made me appreciate other opportunities for people who dream of becoming mothers. I am one of those people. I look forward to what this journey will look like, but it will be a little different».

Selena has also been an advocate for mental health throughout her career, facing physical changes in her body as well. Last year, the Emmy-nominated star opened up about her health struggles in a recent episode of the Apple TV+ series Dear. In it, the pop star/actress shared that her 2014 lupus diagnosis was accompanied by a warning of a stroke and that the medications she takes cause weight fluctuations.

«So, hearing from the doctor, 'You could have a stroke on stage, you could die' - it was a lot. But I didn’t let it take over; I didn’t want to acknowledge it», - explained the «Only Murders in the Building» veteran. She added: «My weight constantly fluctuated because of the medications I was taking, and obviously, people just perceived that. I was judged for gaining weight because of my lupus».

The «Good for You» hitmaker even admitted to «lying» about the negative not affecting her. «I posted these things, saying it didn’t bother me, because I didn’t want it to bother other people who are going through the same thing», - she added. «I just find it so unfair; I don’t think anyone deserves to feel less».

It seems that Selena has gained a new perspective on her mental and physical health, here’s everything you need to know about Selena’s health struggles, how she’s feeling today, and more.

In January 2014, Selena made headlines for secretly undergoing a two-week stay at a rehabilitation center in Arizona. While social media erupted with rumors, the star quickly let her fans know that the stay was far from scandalous. «I was diagnosed with lupus, and I underwent chemotherapy. That’s what my break was really about», - she told Billboard magazine.

As for the negative press surrounding her visit to the treatment facility, she added: «I so badly wanted to say, 'You have no idea. I’m undergoing chemotherapy. You idiots.' I shut myself off until I felt confident and comfortable again».

Lupus is an autoimmune disease that causes chronic inflammation in many parts of the body, such as the skin, joints, heart, kidneys, lungs, and others, according to the Mayo Clinic. This leads to a range of symptoms and potential complications, such as constant pain, overwhelming fatigue, skin rashes, frequent fevers, kidney damage, heart problems, and mental disorders like depression, among others.

As mentioned, Selena was diagnosed in 2014 and has been battling it since. In September 2017, Selena took to her Instagram to let fans know how serious the condition had become. «So I found out I needed a kidney transplant because of my lupus and was recovering. It was what I needed to do for my overall health». In the same post, she thanked one of her best friends, Francia Raisa, for donating a kidney.

Recently on the Apple TV+ show, Selena further praised Francia, saying she will «never, ever, ever be more indebted to a person than to Francia»
