The Netflix series «Selena: The Series» explores the rise of techno singer Selena Quintanilla. The second part, consisting of 7 episodes, was released on May 4th. The new episodes continue to follow Selena’s life on and off stage, including her relationship with Yolanda Saldívar.
The final episode of the first part shows a conversation between Suzette, Selena’s sister, and nurse Yolanda Saldívar. Yolanda asks Suzette if she can create a fan club for Selena. Selena’s family discovered financial discrepancies in her fan club and boutiques, for which Yolanda was responsible. Yolanda had recently been fired from her job in the Quintanilla family. Selena organized a meeting at the Days Inn motel in Corpus Christi, Texas, to confront Yolanda on March 31, 1995. However, there were reports that Yolanda claimed she had been raped and wanted Selena to meet her at the motel.
Yolanda brought a gun and shot Selena once in the back during their confrontation. Selena made it to the lobby before collapsing. She was quickly taken to the hospital, but later pronounced dead. The bullet shattered an artery in her collarbone before exiting her chest, causing significant blood loss.
The former nurse became president of Selena’s fan club after contacting Selena’s father, Abraham Quintanilla, about its creation. Later, she was offered to manage Selena’s clothing boutiques, and she became close with Selena and her family.
After being shot, Selena ran to the motel lobby and told several employees that Yolanda had shot her. «I asked who shot her. She said the lady in room 158. She was groaning. Her eyes were rolling back», - said motel assistant manager Rosalinda Gonzalez, according to AP. Sean Vela, a front desk clerk, admitted that Selena told him, «Lock the door! She’s going to shoot me again». Yolanda was arrested after a 9.5-hour standoff with the police.
Yolanda’s trial took place in October 1995. She claimed her innocence and argued that she intended to use the gun on herself. On October 24, 1995, the jury took less than 3 hours to find Yolanda guilty. She was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole until March 2025. The 60-year-old woman is serving her sentence in a women’s prison in Gatesville, Texas.
