Selena Gomez opens up like never before in her upcoming documentary film for Apple TV+ «Selena Gomez: My Mind and Me». The documentary film, which premieres on November 4th on Apple TV+, explores the last six years of the pop star’s life, including her struggles with both mental and physical health. Selena talks about her parents in the documentary. Her mother Mandy Teefey and her father Ricardo Joel Gomez were teenagers when Selena was born, and they separated a few years later. Both remarried, and Selena now has two step-sisters and one step-brother.
Selena’s parents witnessed her rise from a child actress to a Grammy and Emmy-nominated superstar. Keep reading below to learn more about Selena’s mother and father, as well as her stepfather Brian Teefey and stepmother Sara Gomez.
Ricardo Joel Gomez, also known as Rick Gomez, was born in Mexico and met Selena’s mom (then Amanda «Mandy» Cornett) in high school in Texas. They were teenagers when Mandy became pregnant and gave birth to Selena on July 22, 1992 in Grand Prairie, Texas. Rick and Mandy married after Selena’s birth, but the relationship didn’t work out, and they divorced when Selena was 5 years old.
Rick was relatively absent from Selena’s life in her childhood, and Mandy raised her daughter on her own. She told Harper’s Bazaar in 2013: «When I was seven, my dad would go to Hooters to watch [San Antonio] Spurs games, but he started noticing that when I came, with my little pigtails, all the waitresses were like, 'Hi!' So he started to notice that I was getting attention, but with these cute girls coming. And it became our thing».
Rick was not involved in Selena’s child singing and acting career. «He didn’t want to be part of that industry, so it was really just me and my mom, our way», - said the star of «Only Murders in the Building» to Rolling Stone magazine.
In 2012, Rick married Sara Gomez, and two years later they welcomed their daughter Tori Gomez, who is now 8 years old. Sara also has a son, Marcus Gomez, 18, from a previous relationship. It seems that Rick has become closer to Selena since starting his own family, as he regularly posts photos with the singer of «Same Old Love» on Instagram. It should be noted that Selena is not following her father on Instagram. She follows her mother on Instagram.
Mandy Teefey was much more involved in Selena’s career than Rick. Mandy wanted to be an actress when Selena was little, so she took her daughter to community theater rehearsals while working two jobs. «She was so cool», - said Selena to Rolling Stone. «She was like Drew Barrymore in the nineties, with short hair and butterflies. She sewed her own clothes. I was thrilled and wanted to do what she did».
Selena openly admitted that she blamed her mother for her parents' divorce. «I blamed my mom a lot [for the divorce], because I wanted a family so badly», - said the star of «Wizards of Waverly Place» in a special E! Entertainment episode in 2011. «I wanted my mom and dad to be together. I remember being mad at my mom. I still feel very sorry», - she added.
In 2006, Mandy married talent manager Brian Teefey. They welcomed their daughter Gracie Teefey in 2013. «She's adorable», - said Selena to E! News after Gracie’s birth. «I'm obsessed with her and becoming a big sister. I know I had a responsibility to be a role model for girls, but when you have your own little sister, you think, 'Okay, this is serious.'»
Selena had ups and downs in her relationship with her mother over the years. In 2014, it was reported that Selena fired Mandy and Brian from her management team, which Mandy commented on four years later. «We never expected to manage [Selena] her whole life», - said Mandy to Suggest magazine in 2018. «We lost family time»
