Family Secrets of Sydney Sweeney: Parents, Divorce, and Politics Family Secrets of Sydney Sweeney: Parents, Divorce, and Politics
Sydney Sweeney rarely talks about her parents, but when she does, it’s usually straightforward. Raised in Spokane, Washington, by her mother Lisa and father Steven, an actress, 27, hinted at the complex family dynamics shaped by financial difficulties, divorce, and early ambitions.

As her star continues to rise, curiosity about the people who were there for her at the beginning also grows. Learn more about Sydney’s family below.

Sydney Sweeney was born in Spokane, Washington, to Lisa Sweeney, a former criminal defense attorney, and Steven Sweeney, who worked in hospitality. She grew up in Northern Idaho, in a lakeside home that has been in her family for several generations.

Yes, Sydney’s parents divorced in the mid-2010s, around the time her career began to take off. They also filed for bankruptcy, which Sydney describes as a bitter compromise in support of her ambitions. At around the age of 12, she became interested in acting and convinced her parents to support her dream with a five-year business plan, leading to early auditions and roles in Washington and Oregon. The family eventually moved to Los Angeles when she was around 13 to help her develop in this field.

«My parents sacrificed so much to support my dream, and lost so much during it», - she told Variety magazine in August 2023. «I just felt the responsibility to show them that it was worth it».

Sydney also told the publication that her father now «lives on a ranch in Mexico, and he has no internet or cell service».

She added: «I know he’s proud of me, and I know he thinks, 'What a crazy world!'»

While there is no confirmed evidence that Sydney’s parents support President Donald Trump, in 2022 photos from her mother’s 60th birthday began circulating on the internet, showing guests wearing red hats with the slogan «Make sixty great again» and one person wearing a shirt with the slogan «Blue lives matter too». These images sparked speculation about her family’s political views. Sydney directly responded on social media, calling the assumptions «wild» and explaining that the party was just an innocent celebration. She clarified that the people in the controversial photos were friends, not necessarily family members, and asked the public to stop making political assumptions about her or her loved ones.

Later, she joked about the situation during her monologue on Saturday Night Live in 2024, saying: «When people ask me if I went to a Trump-themed party for my mom, I say 'Idaho' to lighten the mood».

She has a younger brother named Trent Sweeney, who has supported her throughout her career — accompanying her to auditions and supporting her on social media. Trent, 25, has received training in the US Air Force and also streams on Twitch
