Dolly Parton is a legendary singer and songwriter, but she is also a family woman at heart. The singer of the song «Jolene» and country music icon has a total of 11 brothers and sisters with whom she shares her career on stage.
Dolly grew up with her parents, Avie Lee Caroline and Robert Lee Parton Sr., in a one-room cabin with her brothers and sisters! «It was crowded!» Dolly told The Guardian in 2016. «With so many brothers and sisters, there was a lot of teasing and fighting, but we were all together».
Although the family faced financial difficulties, Dolly said they always tried to make the best of it. «We were poor, but I never felt poor», - she explained. «We always had food, a roof over our heads, and clothes on us. It wasn’t exactly what we wanted, but Mom and Dad were always quick to point out families who were suffering much more than we were. It all seemed natural to me».
Dolly began a successful music career after leaving the family home upon finishing school to pursue her dreams. While her brothers and sisters may not have achieved the same level of success as their sister, Dolly said they were all very talented. «We have 12 children, six girls and six boys, and we all sing, write, and play», - she told NPR in 2010. «I just think I took it further. I don’t know how good I am compared to some of the others, but I was willing to sacrifice more and work a little harder than some of the others who might be willing, you know, just to have a family and do other things. But there’s a lot of talent in this family».
