Ariana Grande is facing criticism from the families of Jeffrey Dahmer’s victims. The dispute arose after the 31-year-old singer of «7 rings» appeared on the «Popcrushed» podcast earlier this month, where she recalled how she told a young fan at a Q&A event who her dream dinner date would be.

«I said, 'Oh, you’re so cute. Mom and dad, can I give a real answer?'» Ariana recalled, addressing the child’s parents. «And they said, 'Of course, what’s the answer?', and I said, 'I mean, Jeffrey Dahmer is pretty fascinating. I think I’d be interested in meeting him. You know, maybe with someone else or involved with someone. But I have questions'».

Noting that she was «charmed» by «serial killers» when she was younger, the «Yes, And?» hitmaker also recalled how the fan’s parents reacted to her candid answer.

«The parents said, 'We'll explain that later, dear'», - Ari said. «And I said, 'I'll just sing 'Problem' and go home'».

Shirley Hughes responded to Ariana’s comments during a recent interview with TMZ, published on Thursday, June 27. Shirley is the mother of Tony Hughes, whom Jeffrey killed in 1991.

«I think there’s something wrong with her head», - Shirley told the magazine, referring to Ariana. «You shouldn’t say you’d like to have dinner with him. It’s not funny or amusing. It’s also not something you should tell young people, which she, as she says, did».

According to the publication, Shirley wants Ariana and the public to understand how painful it is for her and the families of other victims to hear Jeffrey’s name. She also said that she is concerned that the former Nickelodeon student did not express any sympathy for the victims and their families during her podcast interview.

In addition, Tony’s sister, Barbara Hughes, told the publication that she feels Ariana’s comments glamorized Jeffrey, and she wants the «Break Free» singer to apologize.

Jeffrey is infamous for killing 17 men and children between 1978 and 1991 and subjecting many to cruel tortures such as cannibalism and dismemberment. In 1992, he was sentenced to life imprisonment and was beaten to death in prison by other inmates in 1994.

Public fascination with the serial killer grew as his story was adapted into various pop culture mediums. Many films and TV shows have been created about Jeffrey, with the latest work being Ryan Murphy’s Netflix series «Dahmer — Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story» in 2022. The families of Jeffrey’s victims accused Ryan of creating a provocative show. In response, the writer stated that he had reached out to the families for advice but did not receive feedback from anyone
