Now the family of the late artist «Teardrops» is speaking out. During the tragedy, one of Liam’s sisters, Nicola, revealed that she learned about her brother’s death through the media.

Nicola broke her silence about her late brother’s death in an Instagram post in October 2024. In her post, Nicola admitted that she and Liam did not take «many photos together, as they never did that as a family», - because they «never wanted him to feel like he was in a room full of fans». However, she noted that Liam’s family was always and forever his «biggest fans».
«I have posted about Liam and his achievements with pride for many years, and it was then, now, and always!!!» Nicola began, before recounting how she learned of Liam’s death. «When I saw the news on my phone that you had left us, I was overcome with cold. I so wanted it to be untrue. I spent days hoping it was a mistake, and someone got it wrong».
She added, addressing Liam, «You lived your life by the motto, why do something if you’re not going to shine at it, and Liam, you truly shone at everything you did! Unfortunately, this cruel world always judges someone too quickly based on a few 5-second clips, then they think it gives them the right to speak as if they know you. We knew you and loved you».
Like Nicola, Ruth is older than Liam. She married her husband Thomas Gibbins in 2016, and they have a son. During his music career, Liam showed Ruth One Direction songs he was working on, she recalled in a heartfelt Instagram post after his death.
«I can’t believe this is happening», - Ruth began. «Many times I have publicly expressed my pride in Liam, but I have never talked much about life as his sister. Liam was my best friend, no one could make me laugh like he could, his improvisations always made me laugh, and he enjoyed seeing how funny he could be».
Ruth then noted that Liam «loved One Direction, he loved his brothers, and we talked so much about this group».
«I feel like this world was not good or kind enough to you, and quite often over the past few years, you really had to try very hard to overcome everything that was thrown at you», - Ruth continued. «You just wanted to be loved and to delight people with your music. … I’m sorry I couldn’t save you. I love you, my heart misses you».
Karen previously worked as a nurse, raising Liam, Nicola, and Ruth. She and her husband, Jeff, supported Liam at the X Factor auditions in 2008 and when he returned in 2010.
