Michael Jackson’s family is struggling with financial difficulties due to an ongoing dispute between the IRS and his estate, according to court documents obtained by People on Thursday, May 30.

The «King of Pop», - who died in June 2009 from acute propofol intoxication, left his three children, Prince, Paris, and Blanket Jackson, as well as the late pop star’s mother, Katherine, as beneficiaries. The entire family has been suspended from receiving money from his trust fund.

A «deficiency notice» was issued regarding the estate, stating that it owes «700 million dollars in taxes» and «undervalued assets». As stated in the documents, the estate won the battle in court in 2021. Shortly before the successful outcome, the estate applied for a review of the value of the singer’s music catalog «Beat It» — known as Mijac — but it remains pending.

Once the total value of the estate is disclosed, deductions will be made. According to the statement, «[The Trust] requires that 20 percent of the estate 'as valued for federal estate tax purposes' be distributed to charity before the remaining estate assets can be distributed to sub-trusts».

Although they do not have access to this fund, the executors suggest that the estate provide for the Jackson family through a «family allowance».

ET also obtained court documents stating: «It appears obvious [Katherine] that the Executors are retaining all assets in the Estate to maintain control over them and avoid a more liberal distribution of Trust claims… There can be no doubt that the Court has jurisdiction to direct the Executors to pay [Katherine] fees from the Estate».

Katherine’s bold move to use part of the estate money to pay bills for an undisclosed lawsuit reportedly led to a conflict with the youngest child, Blanket.

Despite the family’s current difficulties, the singer’s eldest son, Prince, noted that his late father is a «supportive» figure for him and his family during an interview with Good Morning America in 2017, saying: «I think he [Michael Jackson] will always be a supporting figure for me and my brothers and support us in all the endeavors we try to accomplish»
