The Sackler family and their company Purdue Pharma have reached an agreement with a coalition of 15 states in connection with their involvement in the opioid crisis in the United States. If the agreement, reached in January 2025 for a reported $ 7.4 billion, is approved, it will prevent the sale of opioids in America by the Sackler family and end their control over Purdue Pharma, which previously manufactured the drug OxyContin. Although the Sackler family was once wealthy, these payments will require them to pay $ 6.5 billion over 15 years; Purdue will pay $ 900 million as an initial payment, according to CBS News. The money will go towards supporting opioid addiction treatment programs in communities across the country.

New York Attorney General Letitia James announced the agreement on January 23, 2025, stating: «Families across New York and the country have suffered immense pain and loss as a result of the opioid crisis. The Sackler family ruthlessly pursued profit at the expense of vulnerable patients and played a key role in the onset and spread of the opioid epidemic. While no amount of money can ever fully repair the harm they have caused, this massive influx of funds will bring resources to communities in need so that we can heal».

Most people recognize the name Sackler from various movies and TV shows, including «Dopesick» and «Painkiller».

The heads of Purdue Pharma, at one point, included former CEO Raymond Sackler, former president Richard Sackler, former co-chairman Mortimer Sackler, and Arthur Sackler Jr.

In 2015, Forbes reported that Raymond, the highest-paid member of the Sackler family, was estimated to be worth around $ 13 billion. He passed away in 2017.

The combined net worth of the Sackler family exceeded $ 10.8 billion by the end of 2024, according to multiple sources.

According to CBS News, Purdue Pharma will be declared bankrupt after the 2025 agreement. According to Purdue’s website, the company has been dedicated to «restructuring» in recent years. A statement at the top of its page promised that Purdue is working «fully» and «working on introducing new medicines that will help save and improve lives».

According to the New York Attorney General, as of 2025, the Sacklers «no longer have control over Purdue and will never be allowed to sell opioids in the United States again»
