New Jersey Senator Cory Booker is filibustering against Trump: updates New Jersey Senator Cory Booker is filibustering against Trump: updates
Senator Cory Booker from New Jersey spent a sleepless night on March 31, 2025, conducting a filibuster. Protesting against Donald Trump and his administration, the Democrat began his hours-long speech around 7:00 pm Eastern Time and continued it until the next morning. Is Booker still speaking before the Senate?

Below are updates on Booker’s filibuster and additional information about it.

A filibuster is when a politician conducts a lengthy debate or speech to prevent the passage of legislation, such as a bill, vote, resolution, or amendment.

The longest filibuster in American history was when Strom Thurmond conducted a filibuster for 24 hours and 18 minutes in opposition to the Civil Rights Act of 1957.

At the time of publication, Senator Booker was still speaking for over 13 hours, according to The Guardian. In the thirteenth hour, Booker accused the Trump administration of «putting profits above people’s interests».

«They are trying to cut Medicaid and Medicare, programs that nearly a third of our country depends on — all to pay for tax breaks for billionaires and corporations», - Booker said.

Booker decided to speak for as long as he could to protest against Trump’s programs. The Democrat noted at the beginning of his speech: «I rise with the intention to disrupt the normal order of business in the United States Senate for as long as I am physically able. I rise tonight because I sincerely believe that our nation is in crisis».

The Democratic senator continued to discuss recent changes in the Trump administration, referring to rounds of firings and program terminations.

«In just 71 days, the President of the United States has done so much harm to the safety of Americans, financial stability, the foundations of our democracy, and even our aspirations as a people to — from our highest offices — feel a sense of common dignity», - Booker said during his filibuster. «These are not normal times in America, and they should not be treated as such»
