Serena Williams shared a funny moment with an ATM: «I didn’t play for money»

Serena Williams shared a relatively simple moment during her latest appearance on the show «Hot Ones». On Thursday, July 4, in an episode of the famous series, the 42-year-old former tennis player talked about a funny mistake she made while visiting a local ATM, trying to deposit a huge check earned from playing tennis.
«I never played for money», - Serena emphasized. «I played because I loved the sport… I didn’t even know if I wanted to play to be the best, I wanted to win».
The check contained her first million dollars, but the winner of 23 Grand Slam titles noted that she «never spent a lot of money» until she became a famous athlete.
«So my tax consultant would say, 'You didn’t get your money?' and I would reply, 'Oh, I didn’t get that one in Zurich', 'Oh, I forgot that one in Moscow'», - Serena explained. «I played for victory, and if I didn’t win, I didn’t think. I was so angry that I wanted to find a way to get better and win next time».
After receiving her first million, Serena remembered thinking, «Okay, I’ll go deposit it».
«I went to the drive-thru… and the guy said, 'Um, I think you need to come inside for this,' and I said, 'Oh, okay'», - she added.
The founder of Serena Ventures, who is raising daughters Olympia and Adira with her husband Alexis Ohanian, officially ended her tennis career in 2022. In the same year, she told Vogue about her decision to leave the sport.
«These days, if I have to choose between building my tennis resume and building a family, I choose the latter», - Serena explained. «I definitely don’t want to be pregnant again as an athlete. I need to be fully in tennis or fully out of it».
She continued: «In the past year, Alexis and I have been trying to have another child, and recently my doctor gave us information that reassured me and made me realize that when we are ready, we can expand our family»
