The new HBO series «The War» draws inspiration from several high-profile celebrity divorces, and its premiere on October 1 included a scene referencing the well-known incident involving Olivia Wilde at CinemaCon, where she was served custody papers on stage.

In the episode, the fictional couple, Morgan (Dominic West) and Carla (Sienna Miller), were each planning to file for divorce. Morgan learned of Carla’s plans and preempted her by having his assistant deliver the papers to her at her premiere. Series creator George Kay noted that this is not a direct copy but rather a kind of homage. He emphasized that he was struck by the emotional weight of the moment when Wilde faced the reality of being served papers while trying to focus on something else.

Kay expressed gratitude to Sienna Miller for her performance in this fictional moment, adding that it was an important night for her character. He also mentioned that the series explores how divorces are reflected on social media and how this can divide people.

In real life, Wilde received an envelope marked «personal and confidential» during the panel for her film «Don't Worry Darling» at CinemaCon in 2022. It later emerged that the envelope contained custody documents regarding her children from ex-husband Jason Sudeikis. Wilde described the incident as «one of the most horrific moments» of her life, adding that it was a traumatic experience.

The series «The War» tells the story of two prestigious law firms in London that clash in a scandalous divorce case between a tech entrepreneur and his star wife.
