Non-commercial aviation has become a questionable means of transportation for some Americans. Since the beginning of 2025, a chain of fatal aviation incidents and other incidents involving private planes — as well as a few commercial planes — has caused national panic. Right after a helicopter crash in New York, a private plane carrying six prominent college students and doctors crashed in upstate New York on April 12. The tragic disaster occurred shortly after a separate crash of a private plane in Boca Raton, Florida.

Since the beginning of 2025, there has been an alarming number of aviation disasters — so much so that people have lost count. From January 1 to the present, nearly 300 aviation disasters have occurred in the United States, according to NorthJersey.com, citing data from the National Transportation Safety Board.

As for fatal disasters, there have been 66 so far, the publication reports.

The cause of the tragic private plane crash is still unclear. According to the Associated Press, the pilot of the Mitsubishi MU-2B contacted the Columbia County airport dispatcher to report missing the approach for landing and requested a new approach plan. The publication also reported that the dispatcher tried to warn the pilot about low altitude three times, but received no response. It is also officially reported that no distress signal was received from the pilot.

AP also reported that investigators obtained a video recording of the final moments of the plane. The video «shows that the plane was intact and fell to the ground at high speed», - NTSB representative Todd Inman told the press.

During the day, the plane went into a nosedive and crashed in a field in Copake, New York.

Karen Groff was one of the victims of the plane crash in New York. She was a soccer player at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and was named the NCAA Woman of the Year in 2022. Karen was flying with her family to celebrate her 25th birthday, NBCBoston reports.

In addition to Karen, the other passengers on the plane in New York were her father, Dr. Michael Groff, her mother, Dr. Joy Saini, her brother, paralegal Jared Groff, Alexia Cooyutas Duarte, Jared’s partner and Karen’s boyfriend, James Santoro, who was also an MIT graduate
