If you haven’t heard someone say «skibidi toilet» yet, let us tell you about the YouTube series before this strange set of words spreads to television and possibly to the big screen.
The controversial animated internet sensation with over 17 billion views is being developed for television and film by director Michael Bay and former Paramount Pictures president Adam Goodman. In the latest episode of the Variety podcast Strictly Business last week, they sat down for an exclusive interview discussing their plans for Skibidi.
«We are currently in negotiations right now, both on the television side and in the very early stages right now for the film», - Goodman said. «But this is not the end goal for us».
On February 7, 2023, then 23-year-old Alexey Gerasimov uploaded an 11-second video titled «skibidi toilet» to his YouTube channel DaFuq?! Boom! In the video, a head emerges from a toilet and sings. The series continued with toilets with human heads participating in a war with humanoids in a cinematic style known as the machine.
Originally from the former Soviet republic of Georgia, Gerasimov now works with the independent studio Bay and Goodman under the name Invisible Narratives.
Each video is explosive, violent, and devoid of any discernible dialogue. These qualities have brought him a global audience, as well as the title of a cultural icon for the Alpha generation.
«I will say that Michael and Jeffrey Bickroft, who is his long-time production designer and colleague who has worked with him on all of his films, have worked very closely with Alexey to really professionalize this activity to make sure that if we ever decide to make a film or television show, it will be raised above just the resources available to internet creators», - Goodman added.
Bay, a film director best known for his work in the action genre, including the «Transformers» film franchise, told The Washington Post about working with the newcomer.
«I have always been a director who believes in taking risks», - Bay told The Post. «Audiences crave fresh, new ideas. With 'Skibidi,' this is a new world of what the younger generation is watching, and I take that very seriously».
It has become so commonplace among young people that «Skibidi» is now a slang filler word, and there are fan fiction, unofficial merchandise, and games inspired by the series posted on Roblox.
Goodman, whose portfolio includes the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles reboot, Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol, and the SpongeBob SquarePants series, told The Post: «I don’t think we’ve ever had anything that reflects the growth of ['Skibidi Toilet']»
