The sister of Tennessee Titans quarterback Kam Ward, Chantel Ward, issued a statement detailing the threats and insults she received following the team’s loss to the New York Giants with a score of 12−7 on September 27. According to her, after the game, she began receiving messages containing threats and personal attacks against her and her family.
Chantel noted on her Instagram that «the fact that I even have to post this is diabolical». She emphasized that viewers see only the game but do not realize what happens to the players' loved ones after the matches. «After games, people come to my private messages on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram with threats, hate, and disrespect—all because of football», - she wrote.
In one of the messages that Chantel cited as an example, a user wrote: «Maybe he shouldn’t play like a complete idiot, and then people would come here and congratulate you». Chantel added that it is normal to criticize the game and express dissatisfaction with the team, but attacking the family members of players out of frustration from a match is completely unacceptable.
She reminded that for her, Kam is not just a quarterback but her younger brother. «When people come to my page or messages disrespecting him, I’m told not to take it personally—how am I supposed to take it?» she questioned. Chantel also stressed that threats and harassment will never be «just part of the game».
Titans head coach Robert Saleh noted after the game that his quarterback needs to be «smarter with the ball». At the time of the interception, the team was on the opponent’s eight-yard line.
