White House press secretary Caroline Levitt became the main news shortly before Thanksgiving Day 2025, when reports emerged that her brother Michael Levitt’s former fiancée, Bruna Ferreira, had been detained by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Bruna shares a son with Michael, making him Caroline’s nephew.

Here we will explain everything we know at the moment about Bruna, her ICE detention, and her connection to Caroline.

Bruna is a 33-year-old resident of the Boston area who previously dated Caroline’s brother Michael. She and Michael share their son, Michael Levitt Jr., Caroline’s nephew.

According to a statement obtained by The Guardian, a source from the White House familiar with the situation confirmed that Bruna «is the mother of Caroline’s nephew» and added that they «have not spoken for many years».

«The child has been living permanently in New Hampshire with his father since his birth», - the source said. «He has never lived with his mother [Bruna]».

On November 12, 2025, Bruna left her home to pick up her son from school in New Hampshire, and her car was «suddenly surrounded» by ICE agents, according to the Boston Globe and her lawyer Todd Pomerleau, who told CNN that his client has no criminal record. Bruna is currently in an ICE facility in Louisiana.

A Department of Homeland Security representative confirmed Bruna’s arrest to The Guardian.

«ICE arrested Bruna Caroline Ferreira [sic], a criminal illegal immigrant from Brazil», - the statement read. «She had a previous arrest for battery. She entered the U.S. on a B2 tourist visa, which required her to leave the U.S. by June 6, 1999. She is currently at the South Louisiana ICE Processing Center and is in the process of deportation».

The representative added: «Under President Trump and Secretary [Kristi] Noem, all individuals illegally present in the United States are subject to deportation».

According to the publication, Department of Homeland Security representative Trisha McLaughlin claimed that Bruna had a «previous arrest for battery», - which Bruna’s lawyer denied. «We deny that she has any criminal record», - Todd told CNN. «She is not a 'criminal illegal immigrant'».

During a separate interview with ABC station WCVB, Todd said: «Bruna has no criminal record at all. I don’t know where this came from. Show us the evidence».

At the time of publication, Caroline had not publicly commented on Bruna’s ICE detention.

Bruna’s fate is currently unclear, but she is in an ICE facility in Louisiana. Her sister Graziela Dos Santos Rodrigues has started a GoFundMe campaign to help cover Bruna’s legal expenses. At the time of publication, the page had raised over $ 20,000.

«My family is going through one of the most difficult moments in our lives, and we are reaching out with a humble request for help», - Graziela wrote on the GoFundMe page. «My sister, Bruna, was recently detained by immigration and is now fighting to stay in the country she has called home for almost her entire life. Bruna was brought to the United States by our parents in December 1998 when she was just a child, entering on a visa. Since then, she has done everything possible to build a stable, honest life here. She maintained her legal status through DACA, met all requirements, and always strived to do the right thing»
