In Illinois, a woman was arrested after fatally stabbing a 7-year-old girl in what appears to be a «random» attack while the girl was walking with her sister. Shavon Hayden was taken into custody immediately after the incident, which occurred on Saturday, October 3. She has been charged with first-degree murder in connection with the death of Eddimar Paola Hernandez Chacon.
According to Chicago police, Hayden approached Chacon shortly before noon in the Chatham neighborhood. She produced a sharp object and attacked the unsuspecting girl. A police report obtained by the Chicago Sun-Times states that Hayden «approached from the south and, without any provocation, pulled out a knife and began stabbing the victim».
Witnesses quickly intervened, and Hayden was detained until police arrived. Authorities reported that Hayden allegedly sustained injuries during the confrontation and was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening wounds before her arrest.
After the attack, Chacon was rushed to the University of Chicago Children’s Hospital; however, medical staff were unable to save her, and she was pronounced dead at 1:01 PM, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.
A video recording of the incident was captured at the scene. Just before the attack, Chacon was seen walking hand-in-hand with her older sister. Other footage showed bystanders rushing to the scene after Hayden struck the girl, according to WLS.
When police arrived, they found the girl bleeding on the sidewalk as a crowd gathered around. Officers attempted to stop the bleeding by applying pressure to her wounds. When an ambulance arrived about 10 minutes later, police escorted the vehicle to the hospital.
Several witnesses chased Hayden after the attack, and one person stopped her by hitting her with a starter cable, according to WGN.
During the investigation, two knives were found in Hayden’s bag, and a third knife, believed to have been used in the attack, was discovered between the attack site and where she was apprehended.
Hayden was scheduled to appear for a hearing on Monday, October 5, at the Leighton Criminal Court. It is currently unclear whether she has entered a plea or hired an attorney following her arrest. The Chicago police did not respond to Us’s request for comments on the case.
