Shannon Sharpe — one of the most famous faces of the NFL and sports television — made headlines after a video of him became popular on social media on Wednesday, September 11th. Internet users couldn’t believe their ears during Shannon’s live broadcast on Instagram. What happened during the live broadcast?
Shannon is a former tight end and ESPN personality. He played 14 seasons in the NFL — almost all of them for the «Denver Broncos». After leaving the league, Shannon became known as one of the greatest tight ends of all time, earning his place in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
In 2003, Shannon left professional football to work as a sports analyst and commentator on CBS. He was later hired by ESPN and also hosted his own podcasts, including «Club Shay Shay» and «Nightcap». On social media, this Chicago native became known for his sports commentary.
On September 11th, Shannon inadvertently shared audio on Instagram Live of him engaging in sexual activity with an unidentified woman. The TV host initially claimed in a now-deleted tweet that his Instagram account had been hacked. However, he admitted to the content of the video during the latest episode of his podcast «Nightcap».
Recalling what happened when the live broadcast appeared, Shannon said he «threw the phone on the bed, got busy», but «didn't know Instagram was live».
«I've never done IG live, so I don’t know how it works, and suddenly my other phone started ringing», - he explained.
During the podcast episode, Shannon opened up about how embarrassed he felt when his private moment was heard by thousands.
«Obviously, I’m embarrassed», - Shannon admitted. «A person who is extremely, extremely private, and for one of your most intimate moments — audio — to be heard by the whole world, I’m ashamed for many reasons».
He continued, noting that «many people rely» on him «to be a professional at all times», and pointed out that he always tries «to be a professional at all times, even when [he's] behind closed doors».
«I'm very disappointed in myself — not because of the action», - Shannon explained. «I think there are millions and billions of adults engaging in similar activities, but that the audio was heard, I am disappointed in myself. I let a lot of people down».
Shannon is currently not married and has never been married before.
The former football star is a father of three children.
At the time of publication, Shannon had not been fired from ESPN. Since his Instagram Live recently became the center of attention, it is too early to speculate on his employment status at the network owned by Walt Disney Company and partially owned by Hearst Communications
