Residents of a rural town in the state of Kentucky were shocked when news broke that the county sheriff had killed a judge. The murder took place in Whitesburg, Letcher County, and the sheriff immediately surrendered once the police discovered that he was responsible for the judge’s death. As the community grapples with this news, they are seeking answers to the situation.
Letcher County Sheriff Shawn M. Stines has been charged with first-degree murder, according to the Kentucky State Police. Several sources report that the 39-year-old sheriff got into an argument before shooting the judge.
Sheriff Stines shot Judge Kevin Mullins multiple times, according to several sources. Mullins was 54 years old at the time of his death.
During a press conference, Kentucky State Police spokesperson Matt Gehart addressed the public about the incident and acknowledged that the small, close-knit town was «shaken» by the crime.
«I haven’t had a chance to talk to many people — it’s been a very tense and busy day — but this community is small by nature, and we are all shaken», - the police officer said.
Regarding what happened between Judge Mullins and Sheriff Stines, Gehart noted that they had a conflict before Stines fired the shots.
«We know there was an argument between them», - Gehart said, adding, «But what exactly happened before the shots were fired, that’s still what we’re trying to figure out… An autopsy will be conducted in the coming days, and we will follow all leads and ensure a thorough investigation».
According to the Associated Press, prosecutor Matt Butler also commented on the shooting, noting that the residents «all know each other here», - which made this crime shocking.
«Anyone from Letcher County will tell you that Judge Mullins and I married sisters and we have children who are cousins but act like brothers», - Butler said in a statement, as reported by AP. «For this and other reasons, I have already taken steps to recuse myself and my entire office».
