During the first week of classes at Joppatowne High School in Maryland, a 16-year-old student shot and injured a 15-year-old classmate. The suspected shooter fled the school grounds but was reportedly apprehended shortly after. Harford County Sheriff Jeffrey Gahler held a press conference later that same day to explain what had happened at the school.

«Within 15 minutes, there were over 100 police officers from all of our partner agencies here», - Gahler said about the police response, according to various sources.

On Friday, September 6, a 16-year-old allegedly shot a classmate, who is currently hospitalized, according to various sources. The name of the suspected shooter has not been released at the time of publication.

Police issued a message to local residents advising that the shooting was not an «active» situation.

«Please note that this is an isolated incident, not an active shooter. Avoid the area», - the Harford Sheriff’s account tweeted. «Reunification center for parents to pick up their students is at Good Shepherd Presbyterian Church».

Before the sheriff’s press conference, a school representative told 11 News that a message had been sent to families of students.

«This is an important message for our Joppatowne High School community», - the message read, according to a source. «The Harford County Sheriff’s Office responded to an isolated incident on the school grounds today. A fight occurred between known individuals on the school grounds. A weapon was brought onto the school grounds and used in the incident. The Sheriff’s Office and Harford County Public Schools are working together to provide you with this information. At the time of publication, one student had been shot. Therefore, according to various reports, there was no mass shooting at Joppatowne High School. Harford County Schools Superintendent Dr. Sean Bulson stated that the victim remains hospitalized at the time of publication.

«Our hearts break for the victim and their family», - Bulson said, according to CBS News. «This should not happen in schools. Unfortunately, we stand here today to discuss another school shooting. A tragic day just four days into the school year».
