NBC News reported that police revealed Rupnov as the shooter. During a press conference after the shooting, Madison Police Chief Shawn Barnes informed the public that Rupnov was dead. It is believed that Rupnov took her own life by shooting herself.
There were rumors on social media about a supposed manifesto by Rupnov, but Barnes stated that the document had not been confirmed. Barnes also denied rumors that Rupnov had identified as transgender.
«I don’t know if [the shooter] was transgender or not», - Barnes told reporters. «I don’t think anything that happened today has any bearing on how she or he or they might want to identify. And I would like people to leave their personal biases aside».
Barnes continued: «Whether she, he, or they are transgender, that may be known later, but for us right now, today, literally eight hours after a mass shooting at a school in Madison, it doesn’t matter at this moment».
One teacher and one student died, according to NBC News. Six others were injured, with two in critical condition.
Police reported that Rupnov opened fire in a classroom with students of different ages. The police chief noted that a second-grader made the 911 call.
«Let that sink in. A second-grader called 911 at 10:57 a.m. to report a shooting at the school», - Barnes told the public.
Several sources interviewed surviving students, one of whom was only 8 years old. The student told WISC-TV that she heard gunshots and saw a teacher who «was screaming, like 'Ahh, my leg! Help! Help!'»
According to CNN, by December 2024, there had been at least 83 school shootings in the United States this year. Over 50 incidents occurred in elementary and middle schools. However, other sources reported that there were over 300 school shootings in 2024
