The former couple became known for their comedic antics on social media and playful public appearances, but everything changed when they announced their split in early September. They then entered into a messy custody dispute, which was settled on October 10, 2023.

Shortly after the Jonas Brothers began their 2023 tour, rumors surfaced that Joe had consulted divorce lawyers in Los Angeles in early September. After the Labor Day weekend, the «Burnin' Up» singer filed for divorce from the «Game of Thrones» actress after four years of marriage. The couple then released a joint statement via Instagram, acknowledging their separate existence.
«After four wonderful years of marriage, we have mutually decided to friendly end our marriage», - Joe and Sophie wrote on September 6. «There are many speculative stories about the reasons, but this is truly a mutual decision, and we sincerely hope that everyone can respect our desire for privacy for us and our children».
During the Jonas Brothers concert at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles on September 9, the «Cake By the Ocean» performer told fans not to believe everything they hear.
«It's been a tough week. I just want to say, if you don’t hear it from these lips, don’t believe it. Okay?» Joe said on stage. «Thank you all for your love and support. My family and I love you».
On September 21, Sophie filed a lawsuit against Joe in Manhattan for «the immediate return of children, unlawfully taken or unlawfully retained». The divorced spouses are raising their daughter Willa and a second daughter, Delphine.
In court documents originating from the UK, she claimed that she and the New Jersey resident had agreed to move to her native country, England, for Christmas 2022. She also claimed that they planned to look for new schools for their eldest child. Furthermore, Sophie claimed that she «learned from the media» that Joe had filed for divorce from her.
Hours after the Joan star filed the lawsuit, Joe’s representative responded with a statement to Hollywood Life.
«After several conversations with Sophie, Joe began the divorce process in Florida, as Florida is the appropriate jurisdiction for the case», - the representative wrote. «Sophie knew that Joe was going to file for divorce. The Florida court has already issued a ruling that prohibits both parents from moving the children. Sophie was notified of this decision on September 6, 2023, over two weeks ago».
The representative added that Joe and Sophie «had a friendly meeting last Sunday in New York, when Sophie came to New York to be with the children», - and that «Joe's impression of the meeting was that they had reached an understanding that they would work together towards a friendly co-parenting system».
