Shocking finale of Season 2 of the series Severance: what happened?
21 march 2025 в 18:28
Everyone knows that «Severance» is a twisty and psychologically gripping series that flips the idea of the American workplace — even those who haven’t watched the show yet. But the second season ended on such a twist that fans can’t come to terms with it. In the 10th episode of the second season titled «Cold Harbor», - viewers got a more violent and dramatic experience inside Lumon, as recognized by director Ben Stiller.
«I think there are a lot of questions that arise, and here’s what I liked about the closing moment, as written by [creator] Dan [Erickson]», - Ben told The Hollywood Reporter in a March 2025 interview. «When we cut to this frozen frame and we cut to red — which we’ve never had that color before, blood for the first time — but for me, it’s kind of a shift, okay, we’re going into a different mode here. It’s much darker and more dystopian than we’ve seen».
So what happened at the end of the second season? Hollywood Life breaks down the season finale here! (Warning: spoilers ahead for the second season of «Severance»)
The second season of «Severance» has 10 episodes. The first season had nine episodes.
In the finale of the second season, Mark S. (played by Adam Scott) murders Mr. Drummond (played by Ólafur Darri Ólafsson) with a gun as he switches from his innie to his outie in the Lumon elevator. Outie Mark wakes up in a pool of blood from Drummond’s throat, while Innie Mark goes through a serious fight with Drummond upstairs.
Mark needs to get to the Cold Harbor room, which, as viewers know, has been hinted at throughout the season. Fans believed that Gemma (played by Dichen Lachman) would die once the Cold Harbor file was completed. Gemma does indeed reach the Cold Harbor room to complete the task, and Mark can intervene. When she switches to her Outie, their emotional reunion is threatened by Dr. Mauer, who is closing in on them. Just before Mauer can stop them, the elevator closes, and Mark and Gemma can escape. When another personality of Gemma’s, Miss Casey, appears, Mark realizes his mission and helps free her from Lumon.
However, Mark returns to Helly (played by Britt Lower) — or possibly Helen — leaving Gemma’s fate uncertain. Perhaps she doesn’t know that Mark is divided.
Discussing the finale of the second season with THR, Ben noted that the episode raises «questions about safety in Lumon», - particularly referring to the bloody moment with the gun.
«How do they control people?» Ben asked. «I think somewhere in my head I was thinking, 'Well, at some point…'. I never wanted this to be a show where everyone walks around with guns or something like that. That’s not the show. But there has to be some dark underbelly to this whole thing. So, maybe I thought we would get to that at some point, but honestly, I didn’t think we would go as far as we did».
