Hurricane Milton seems to be causing havoc even before reaching the shore. There are a few hours left before the hurricane hits Florida, and several tornadoes have formed throughout the state. While residents are evacuating from certain areas in the path of the hurricane, some have been caught in tornadoes in areas such as Alligator Alley and others. Each tornado was different, but each was equally dangerous to be near.
Milton is officially expected to reach the Florida coast either on the evening of Wednesday, October 9, or early Thursday, October 10. The storm is expected to hit Tampa.
Several tornadoes hit Florida on Wednesday, October 9, before Hurricane Milton approached. One tornado was spotted near Alligator Alley in Collier County, according to various sources.
Other tornadoes were observed along I-75 in the Sunshine State and in Clewiston.
According to information on their website, the National Weather Service (NWS) explains how a hurricane can cause tornadoes.
«These tornadoes most often occur in thunderclouds embedded in rain bands far from the center of the hurricane; however, they can also occur near the eye of the hurricane», - NWS points out. «Most tornadoes associated with tropical systems occur in the storm’s right front quadrant. This area typically has the best wind shear and instability».
Not many tornadoes form in tropical regions, but for those that do, they come from «tropical systems that move inland in the Gulf of Mexico and continue to move north/northeast», - the NWS website states. «Tornadoes spawned by tropical cyclones are typically weak and short-lived, but they still pose a significant threat».
Initially classified as a Category 3 hurricane, Milton quickly intensified to a Category 4 earlier this week. Suddenly, it fluctuated between Categories 4 and 5. As it approaches Florida, the hurricane is currently a Category 4.
As Orlando is one of the most populated cities in Florida, the following places have announced temporary closures due to Milton: Walt Disney World, Universal Orlando Resort, and Orlando International Airport.
Although there are no mandatory evacuation orders in Orlando, the region is in the path of Milton
