Today, the Northeast received a small shock. A little before 10:30 am Eastern Time on Monday, January 27, residents of New England felt an earthquake. Although the earthquake was not as massive as on the West Coast, residents of Massachusetts and Maine were surprised to feel the ground shake, but did New Hampshire also suffer? Find out below.

The epicenter of the earthquake was off the coast of New England near York Harbor, Maine, but residents of New Hampshire felt the jolt. People living in Seacoast, Dover, Manchester, Concord, Keene, Claremont, and several neighboring towns reported feeling the earthquake.

Today’s earthquake was a magnitude 3.8. The US Geological Survey initially called it a 4.1, but quickly lowered the measurement.

York County EMA publicly confirmed the earthquake, tweeting: «We can confirm that a small earthquake occurred at 10:22 am. The shake was felt throughout the county. There is no threat to the public. To assist our dispatch centers, please DO NOT call 911 unless it is an emergency».

Bostonians felt the earthquake, although the epicenter was about 60 miles from the city. According to various sources, residents near Boston, including Wakefield, Woburn, Winchester, Winthrop, Foxboro, Newburyport, Hudson, Mansfield, Medford, Marlborough, and Walpole, reported feeling the jolt this morning.

Since the earthquake occurred off the coast of Maine, many residents of the state felt the ground shake beneath them.

The US Geological Survey estimates that New England may experience about two minor earthquakes per year. The survey’s website even states that people «in New England and its geological extension to the south through Long Island have felt small earthquakes and suffered from rare larger ones since colonial times».

Over the past five years, most earthquakes in New England have not exceeded a magnitude of 5.0. In April 2024, residents of New York felt the effects of an earthquake that occurred in New Jersey. Reports indicate that this was the largest earthquake in the region since 1884
