Simone Biles explains why she thought America hated her

Simone Biles has always been and will always be the GOAT of women’s gymnastics. However, even beloved athletes have tough days. Everyone remembers the moment in 2021 when the 27-year-old gymnast had to withdraw from the team final of the Olympic Games in Tokyo due to a case of the «twisties»: when a gymnast loses spatial awareness and cannot determine when and where to land on their feet.
«America hates me. The whole world will hate me», - Simone recalled during an interview for the «Call Her Daddy» podcast on April 17. «I can only see what they’re writing on Twitter right now. … If I could get on a plane and fly home, I would. I thought I was going to get banned from America because this is what they tell you: 'Don't come back unless you have gold. Gold or failure. Don’t come back'».
Recalling the moment when she failed to land properly during a vault, the Olympic champion noted: «So I landed like this, and right after I landed, I smiled and thought, 'Damn'».
At that time, Simone did not sustain a serious injury. However, the harrowing experience forced her to withdraw from the team final, opening the door for Suni Lee to win gold. Simone competed in the balance beam final, where she placed third overall and won a bronze medal.
In another interview for the «Call Her Daddy» podcast, Simone recalled another situation that she and her husband, Jonathan Owens, had to face last year. In December 2023, Jonathan, 28, appeared on «The Pivot» podcast, where he said that men are the «prey» in relationships. This comment caused a wide resonance on social media, which, according to Simone, «hurt her».
«At first, I thought it was funny, and then [people] touched my feelings», - she admitted. «Once I broke down and thought, 'Why are you talking about my husband like that? You don’t know him. You don’t know who he is. And if anyone has met him, they know that he is the kindest and willing to help anyone'».
The athlete continued: «I didn’t think about anything in that interview, and he never said that I’m not prey. He said he is prey. Because that’s who he is. I’ve never met a man like him. Many who have met him say, 'Oh my God, I want a man like Jonathan'»
